The Most Popular Types of Roofing Sheets

When choosing roofing materials, most of the people go with flat roof coverings and roof tiles, but there are also other popular types of roofing sheets. Often used types include polycarbonate sheets, PVC roofing sheets, puff panel, asphaltic sheets, asbestos sheets etc. Three types are distinguished for popularity and those are corrugated roofing sheets, metal sheet roofing, and polycarbonate roofing sheets.

Corrugated roofing sheets are very strong and stable, stronger than a flat counterpart. This type of roofing sheets has a variety of materials. The most common options are galvanized steel sheet. Corrugated roofing sheets are often finished with a PVC coating.

Metal sheet roofing is similar to corrugated roofing sheets, but it has less curves. It is very popular as a covering for garages or garden buildings. Metal sheets are strong and lightweight. They often have different finishes and materials, even come in a variety of colors. The most used metals are steel and aluminum. Steel is heavier and stronger. Some very expensive options include copper metal roofing and stainless – steel which is usually unaffordable, but very high-quality.

Polycarbonate roofing sheets are known in different names and are made of polypropylene resin. They are very easy to cut and easy to use. What is interested for those types of roofing sheets is that they are pH neutral. Water or oils don’t have an impact on them at normal temperatures. Some of them have extraordinary finishes like ultra-violet protection, corrosive inhibitors, flame retardant etc. Polycarbonate roofing sheets found use mostly in garages, but are also popular among animal keepers.

Apart from these, types of roofing sheets include many different materials, such as thatch, wheat straw, rye straw, wood shingle, slate, solar shingle, membrane roofing, and all of these have many variations.

Mostly Used Types of Roofing Materials

Mostly Used Types of Roofing Materials

Not all types of roofing materials are the same. They can have a huge difference in terms of appearance, cost, and longevity. The cheapest ones include rolled roofing and composite shingles, while most expensive are stainless steel, natural slate, and eco-friendly green roofing.

Rolled roofing material is used for low-slope roofs on houses, shops, as well as some other structures. It is a very affordable type of roofing material, but not so aesthetically pleasing and stable.

Composite shingles or composite asphalt shingles may be one of the most popular types of roofing material. These shingles consist of asphalt and mineral granules and usually last for 20-30 years. Also, they are easy to repair.

Metal roofs gained a huge popularity lately but can be very expensive. One of the great advantages of metal roofing is that it is fire-resistant. There are some pretty expensive variants of metal roofing like stainless steel or copper.

Slate shingles are also commonly used. Slate roof implies thin sheets of stone and it’s not very easy to install. It’s an authentic and steady type of roofing material. A slate roof can last for more than 100 years without any replacement.

Natural roofing is a type of roofing that includes plants like moss or other organic materials. Moss can be an effective roofing type when properly planned. It can provide good thermal insulation and absorb rainwater. A green roof is eco-friendly but still considered eccentric.

One more organic roofing type is a wood shingle roof. It usually lasts for 25 years and requires repairs often. Wood is also used in the form of wood shake which can last longer, up to 40 years. Wood shakes are very much thicker than wood shingles. Wood types of roofing material require moss removal regularly.

The Advantages and Disadvantages of Gable Roof

gable roof min

The Advantages of Gable Roof

Roof shapes vary a lot from region to region, but gable roof is the simplest and most seen roof shape, especially in areas with colder weather. That is a roof all people think of when they imagine a house. It consists of two sections, placed in opposite directions and forming an inverted V. Simple to design and build, gable roof is most commonly used in many geographic regions.

Gable roof is inexpensive, much more affordable than any roofing shape. It allows many design variations but is based on simplest design principles. Gable roof shed water and snow easily because of its triangular shape.

Types of Gable Roofs

Side Gable: Basic shape, has two gable roof panels pitched at a certain angle. Panels are equal. It can be open – with an open triangle section, or enclosed – a boxed roof.

Crossed Gable: Two roof sections positioned at a right angle. Used for houses with separate wings. Often built on Tudor-styled houses.

Front Gable: Place at the house entrance. Often built on Colonial-styled houses.

Dutch Gable: A combination of hip roof and gable roof. Also known as gambrel.

There are other categorizations, but this is the simplest one.

Gable Roof Disadvantages

When a wind is extremely strong, gable roof can collapse if not built properly. The roof can be destroyed in a hurricane, for example, so gable roofs in areas with very strong winds require special support in construction. Also, roofing material can peel away due to high winds. Gable roof can be covered with many materials. Mostly, those materials include metal, concrete tiles, terra cotta tiles, asphalt shingles. If the roof has a dormer, it needs to have a standing seam to prevent roof leaks. In regions with a lot of snow, it is recommended to use at least 40° angle.
